The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has given the green light to a significant irrigation initiative worth PKR 23.835 billion aimed at implementing the Automated Indus Basin Irrigation System (IBIS), according to a news report dated February 7.

During a CDWP session presided over by Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Dr. Muhammad Jehanzeb Khan at the P-Block Secretariat, the project titled “Installation of Telemetry System for Real-Time Discharge Monitoring at 27 Key Sites on Indus Basin Irrigation System” was deliberated upon. The CDWP has endorsed the project and forwarded it to the National Economic Council (ECNEC) Executive Committee for final approval.
The proposed project, which seeks to modernize the IBIS, slates to fund through the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP), with PKR 500 million allocates by the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) from its resources. Under the supervision of IRSA and with implementation duties assigned to the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), the project aims to replace manual irrigation water management systems with automated telemetry equipment at 27 strategic locations.
Additionally, this advanced equipment will furnish real-time information on water flow and gate positions, addressing control challenges and potential inter-provincial conflicts. By ensuring transparency, fair water allocation, and adherence to the Water Apportionment Accord of 1991, the project aims to bolster trust and foster harmonious relations among provinces.

Moreover, upon its completion, the project anticipated to spur social, agricultural, and industrial progress. It also generates employment opportunities during both its execution and maintenance phases. It’s worth noting that IRSA, as mandated by a 1992 Act of Parliament. However, the oversees the regulation and distribution of surface waters among provinces under the Water Apportionment Accord of 1991.
