The Punjab government unveiled plans to revamp the historic Sujan Singh Haveli in Bhabara Bazaar, Rawalpindi, into a major tourist spot, as reported in national dailies on December 1.
Dr. Jamal Nasir, Punjab’s Minister for Primary & Secondary Healthcare & Population, directed the district administration and municipal corporation to repurpose the century-old structure, built in 1890 by Sikh leader Sujan Singh, transforming it into a multifunctional space housing a food court, museum, and art gallery.

Despite numerous revitalization attempts over the last decade, the haveli, initially owned by a Sikh family during Partition and later transferred to Fatima Jinnah Women’s University in the late 1990s, saw proposals such as an art school go unrealized.
The latest plan designates PKR 104 million for Sujan Singh Haveli restoration and PKR 80 million to revive the Bhabara Bazaar food street. The ambitious project aims to restore the street to its 1857 state, upgrade neighboring house facades, and modernize infrastructure by burying utility cables and sewerage pipes.
This transformation seeks to make Rawalpindi a key tourist hub, especially for travelers heading to Murree via Rawalpindi, thereby creating local job opportunities.

During a visit to the haveli, the minister highlighted its tourism potential and proposed restricting traffic in Raja Bazaar, Sarafa Bazaar, and Bhabara Bazaar to pedestrians.
Plans for expanding the Fawara Chowk parking plaza and considering a new parking plaza near Bhabara Bazaar are underway to accommodate the growing tourist influx. Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatha reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to revitalizing the area, emphasizing plans to uplift surrounding old houses to further promote tourism.
