The Punjab and Sindh governments have different opinions about the report. The Sindh government objected to constructing canals without analyzing the potential impact on water availability. They argued that building canals without ensuring sufficient water would exacerbate existing shortages. Hence, Sindh has expressed unwillingness to accept the proposal without assurance of increased water availability.

However, Punjab believes the Cholistan Canal would use floodwater for four months of the year. The additional water will be sourced from within Punjab for the rest of the months.

Provinces compete head-to-head for fair resource allocation, so the project’s outcome will be closely observed. CDWP, being the decision-maker, will assess the various factors, including environmental impact, cost-benefit analysis, and long-term sustainability.

Once CDWP approves the project, the next step is to secure the finances. The project will take a long time to complete, but it will change the region’s agriculture and economy.
