Pakistan, November 19, 2024: The Asian Development Bank is all set to initiate measures to cut greenhouse gas emissions in Pakistan. The emphasis would be to improve water efficiency.

The local authorities are collaborating with ADB to improve the water production capacity. A pilot study has been instigated in Okara and Sheikhupura to trail alternative methods for wetting & drying soil.
Water wastage in agriculture is one of the environmental challenges, and this trial aims to reduce it. Moreover, the initiative corresponds with the Paris Agreement signed in 2015 and the Global Methane Pledge to minimize the impacts of climate change, focusing on the farming industry, which is the primary producer of methane.
In the last few decades, Pakistan’s rice exports have increased by 95%, with an annual export volume of USD 3.7 Billion. ABD and Pakistan’s collaboration will protect rice production from the impact of climate change.
While commenting on greenhouse gas emissions, an ADB spokesperson said, “The rice crop needs protection from the effects of climate change, and our partnership with Pakistan focuses on providing that.”

The nation hopes this initiative will bring sustainability to Pakistan’s agricultural future and combat the environmental challenges of water scarcity and climate change.
