Punjab, November 4, 2024: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has banned smog-generating activities across Punjab amid growing health crises. In the initial phase, the authority has announced a province-wide crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles and industries.

Banned Smog-Generating Activities
The banned activities include burning crop residue, stone crushing without scrubbers, all industrial operations without adequate emission controls, and burning solid wastes, including plastic, tires, and rubber. Moreover, the sale and use of substandard fuels are also prohibited.
The notification from PDMA grants the deputy commissioner the authority to act as relief commissioner. He will be responsible for enforcing the measures and taking steps to lessen the smog levels.
The city has been ranked as the second-most polluted globally, with an Air Index Quality of 276. To combat the situation, the Punjab administration has banned construction in highly polluted zones, including Shimla Pahari, Queen Mary Road, Davis Road, Empress Road, and Kashmir Road. In addition, BBQ restaurants are instructed to close by 8 p.m. and marriage halls by 10 p.m.
The Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, while addressing the health impact, said that students with special needs and health conditions should take online classes instead of attending school in person.
Punjab administration is strictly ensuring compliance with smog control violations.
Till now, 9 brick kilns and 4 industrial units have been demolished. The EPA has fined vehicles emitting smoke Rs. 120,000 while monitoring emissions through night vision digital cameras round the clock. The EPA has also committed itself to safeguarding the four million trees planted to enhance the environment.
Minister for Agriculture, Local Government and Rural Development, Marriyum Aurangzeb, has vowed that the government stands against environmental degradation, declaring the plantation of trees on roadsides and other shoulders of any development scheme.

She asked public members to report any activities emitting smoke to the toll-free number 1373 and vowed that the EPA would take action against smog. These comprehensive actions are especially needed as Punjab steps up measures to protect public health, which is predicated on smog that threatens millions.
